Shakespeare, history and comfort in one accommodation
Staying at The Smokery House will combine comfort with the experience of feeling part of history.
"Piping Pebworth, dancing Marston, haunted Hillbro,
hungry Grafton, dodging Exhall, papist Wixford, beggarly Broom
and drunken Bidford”
This rhyme was written when Shakespeare and his friends from Stratford upon Avon took part in drinking contests with teams from local villages. Fortunately, Broom is no longer beggarly.
The Smokery House adjoins The Brew House and together they were the source of ale for the people of Broom. Looking back at old Census documents for the mid-19th Century, there were five men working on the site, so demand must have been high.
Who knows whether Shakespeare himself may have drunk a pint, or three, made on the premises in earlier times? What is for sure is that the smokery, used for drying the hops, remains as part of the house for all visitors to see.
